This is the best "defense" of lateral moves that I've read, so thanks for writing it.

Particularly important is overcoming our egos and the notion that somehow a lateral is a backward move rather than a growth one. It tells the company that our interest is first about the work than ourselves, even though, as you suggest, a lateral is a positioning move that can result in promotion.

I also love your advice about being fully engaged in the details of the transaction, which is the actual move. Too often, employees leave it up to others, thus disengaging from the business of managing their careers.
